A private, environmentally sustainable writers studio which allows time devoted to writing novels.
“The Ark” is clad in vertical hardwood timber, creating a dramatic backdrop to the garden and patio area. Random dimensioned hardwood cladding lines the entry stair and leads into the generous volume of the writer’s studio. Detailed joinery and selection of finishes create a peaceful atmosphere ideal for concentration and contemplation. An extensive book collection finds a home amongst the ample shelving.
A large sliding door at the northern end leads to a small deck that gently touches an established lilly pilly tree and enjoys the ample bird life supported there. A small window sits over the writing desk looking into close vegetation and a western window gives glimpses to the gardens and the outside world.
The interiors of this project have been carefully considered to maximise the use of the space and to create a serene environment for creative thought.
Shelving has been meticulously thought through to create spaces for artwork and books; frame windows; and to make spaces for writing and for music equipment.
Concealed lighting to some of these spaces transform the studio as night falls. A central, free-standing book self-conceals and doubles as the head of the bed. The soft tones of solid blackbutt timber cabinetry, spotted gum flooring and Tasmanian Oak ceiling are balanced by the small areas of softly toned painted walls and the solid white door and draw fronts that reflect light within the space.
Small-framed windows give views in various directions to the outside world, allowing for different focus during various times of the day and weather conditions.
The bathroom has been designed to be wheelchair friendly with reinforced walls to allow for future grab rails should they be needed in the future. Brightly coloured, patterned tiles give a sense of fun within this small space.
Overall, the studio has a very generous, spacious feel, while creating a sense of warmth and calm conducive to contemplation and creative pursuit.
