We first met Brett from Ecolibrium Designs when we visited his home in Eumundi that was part a sustainable house tour. It was clear from that meeting that Brett had passion for sustainable design and construction.

Around a year later we were looking for somewhere to build on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and coincidentally found a building block in Eumundi. We wanted to build as much as we could sustainably so Ecolibrium Designs was the obvious choice for us.

The initial design process involved a check sheet to find out from us what we needed and what was important to us in the design. The check list was very thorough so we left that meeting feeling confident we were on the right track.

We could not have been happier with the design that Brett and his team came up with. The design was bold and the finished product suited our lifestyle perfectly. Brett and his team handled the sloping block well and took full advantage of the northern aspect to create a home that is comfortable all year round. Extensive use of hempcrete in the design means we now live in home with exterior walls that insulate and breath not allowing internal mould or the need for air conditioning.

Brett and his team created a stunning looking home design that is easy living, health beneficial and very economical to run.

We have now had the pleasure of living in our home for a full twelve months and more. We are delighted with the comfort and ambience of the home, specifically with the extensive use of aged, recycled timber including tallowwood flooring throughout, which is over 100 years old. The thermal mass walls of recycled Besser brick and Rockcote render are an effective and attractive aspect of the living areas and bedrooms of the home. Extensive incorporation of louvre windows in bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas provide a good airflow.

Tinted windows and external insect screens have been successful in preventing bird strikes, which was of concern to us. The north-east aspect has been of great benefit with winter sun streaming into kitchen and living areas on cold winter mornings. Similarly, the south west verandah area has been beneficial in summer. After some difficulties with Origin Energy billing systems, we are now in credit with our energy provider with our 1.5Kwh solar system. With 36,000 water tank storage, we are also water independent and do not receive costly Allconnex water fees. The gardens of endemic native plants and food plants are giving us much joy with their amazing growth in the first year to the extent that we were able to host a garden party for 100 guests on the first anniversary of our move to our home.

We searched for someone with design and environmental credentials, and who could work with both of us equally. We were delighted to find Brett. His collaborative and respectful work with us resulted in not just a wonderful bespoke house, but a home that is perfectly designed for our block and for our lifestyle. The spaces and the ways they connect within our home are both functional and beautiful; the connection between the house and our bush and views is a balm for our souls. The design also allows us to grow old in this home. It’s no surprise that we are enthusiastic in our recommendation of Ecolibrium Designs.

Brett and his team at Ecolibrium delivered and then some.  Brett was extremely thorough and had tremendous patience to work through our requirements in detail. He is very knowledgeable about the wide variety of materials and methods for eco-friendly design. We also took advantage of the interior design service that Ecolibrium provides and we found it was incredibly valuable for choosing interior and exterior finishes. We write this testimonial to the skill and professionalism of Brett Grimley of Ecolibrium Designs in designing our sustainable home in the Currumbin Eco Village. The architectural code of the Eco Village is a most demanding document as is the design approval process through the Village Design Panel. Further our block of land is steep and challenging.

Brett approached the design process with enthusiasm and commitment to design our ecologically sustainable home. He patiently listened to our ever changing wish list and greatly facilitated our decision making on our final requirements. His final design fully integrated green technologies and solutions in a cost effective manner without compromising the overall quality of the design. His adherence to the strict covenants of the award winning Currumbin Eco Village made for a relatively smooth path through the Eco Village approval process and certification by the Gold Coast City Council. He researched new materials and products and incorporated recognised recycled and renewable materials to enhance the aesthetic character of our home. His completed drawings were of such a high standard that they were suitable for calling tenders from builders. We look forward to living in our sustainable home with the character of timber and recycled materials, a home which is warm in winter and cool in summer, with a minimal ecological footprint.
